Property description

Grand Storehouse (later named the Vulcan Building) was the principal structure on the New Gun Wharf, built 1811-14. Its north wing and clock tower were both destroyed in the Blitz and only reinstated as part of the Gunwharf Quays reconstruction. This unique apartment captures brilliantly the historical edge Gunwharf has to offer but also the modern twist contrasts brilliantly into a stylish and sleek 21st Century home. You will find spacious reception areas with exposed walls and beams. The Apartment itself consists of a spacious layout comprising; entrance hall, open plan living/dining/kitchen complete with a range of integrated appliances and electrically operated skylight windows making for a light and airy feel around the property. The two double bedrooms both have extensive fitted wardrobes, the master having its own en-suite while the shower room adjoins bedroom two.

The Vulcan Building - And Historic Past...

In purchasing a converted property in the Vulcan Building, Gunwharf Quays, you are acquiring a part of the English Cultural Heritage.

Gunwharf Quays is steeped in history which stretches as far back as the 12th century when, in 1194, Richard 1 let out land for the development of a dockyard and constructed a dock for Royal galleys, known as Richard's Docks. Gunwharf Quays was the main ordinance yard for the navy, established in the late 17th century. From here, ships would collect their cannon balls, gunpowder and weapons before leaving Portsmouth Harbour for action. Nelson's ship hms Victory would have collected her munitions from Gunwharf Quays before the Battle of Trafalgar.
A number of storehouses and other buildings were built, and on 28 November 1811 the Foundation stone of the most imposing of all these, 'The Grand Storehouse' known as The Vulcan Building was subsequently laid by the Duke of Clarence.
