Property description

Set in a perfectly central position in the town centre is this wonderful character cottage, historically the home of authors Mary and Percy Shelley.

Description
Shelley Cottage is a charming three storey town house, forming part of an historic Grade II Listed building. The site is believed to have originally been the site of a late 16th century home, rebuilt in the 18th century as one large town house. Early in the 19th century the literary greats Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley purchased the home, where she penned her masterpiece Frankenstein. They moved from the property in 1818 and at some point afterward the property was split into four homes that remain in place today.

The properties are particularly handsome in architecture, with a tall flat façade interspersed with covered storm porches. Ornate detail to the window openings and frames, along with an attractive roofline, provide architectural interest.

To the inside of the property it provides on the ground floor a reception room overlooking the street scene to the front, an inner hall with guest cloakroom and a bright kitchen and dining room with vaulted ceiling, overlooking the rear courtyard garden. Heading up the stairs to the first and second floors, there are two double and one single bedroom, along with a good size bathroom.

Outside to the rear of the house is a pretty garden, attractively decked to provide an all-year-round entertaining space. To the rear of the garden is a useful timber outbuilding for storage.

Location
Shelley Cottage is set in a particularly beautiful part of West Street, just off the town centre and amongst some particularly handsome period buildings.

Marlow town offers a superb range of retailers, with an eclectic mix of local independent and national retailers. There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants dotted around the town offering destinations for any occasion. The town itself is situated on the banks of the River Thames and the Thames Path follows the river through the town.

Just outside the town, the area opens out to glorious rolling countryside and a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Outdoor pursuits are numerous, as are golf, football, cricket and rugby clubs.

For commuters, the town has a train station to Paddington (via Maidenhead) and the M40 and M4 motorways are accessed from the A404(M) which passes the town.

A comprehensive range of private and state schooling options, both primary and secondary, in the area include Danesfield House, Spinfield and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School which is just 100 metres along the Street.
