History

This property oozes history and character below are some interesting facts:-

The Burnham coastguard members and their families were originally housed aboard HMS Kangaroo before being relocated to the purpose built (1886) Coastguard cottages in Silver Road

The chief officer's accommodation was either built separately or, as is the case with Thorne House, placed at the end of a row of terraced houses. The chief officer's house often (as is the case with Thorne House) contained
a 'watch room' with separate access, unconnected to the residence (now connected). These rooms were used to store arms and ammunition, signaling and observation equipment. It was also the place from which Coastguards were mustered and orders issued.
