Electric trams in Bath started running on 2 January 1904 with the last passenger tram on Saturday 6 May 1939. The standard gauge electric tramways were an electrification and extension of the previous 4ft gauge horse tramways. Routes ran from the city centre northeast to Bathford, south to Combe Down, southwest to Oldfield Park, west to Twerton and Newton St. Loe and northwest to Weston giving a total of just under 15 miles of route. Bath Tramways route No5 went from the Guildhall over the old bridge into Oldfield Park to the Cynthia Rd terminus. To enable the trams to run under the railway bridge in Westmoreland Rd, six single deck cars (nos 50-55) were operated on this route whereas all other city routes used double deck trams.
