In 1871 Robert Smith, the prosperous owner of Hayford Mill, Cambusbarron (the largest tweed mill in Scotland at this time) commissioned the prominent Architect J. Dick Peddie to design and build Brentham Park House. Brentham Park House was completed in 1873.

Firstly, Thomas Alexander, who worked in the chemical industry with later mergers creating ici, then John Greig, a ship owner, who was awarded the cbe for services to the Ministry of Shipping during the First World War.
