Property description

One of only 20 Grade II listed properties in the area, White Cottage is a testament to architectural design and tradition.

Based upon the revival of mediaeval hall houses, the property includes a vast 46ft, south-west facing living space that overlooks a 90ft rear, walled garden. Replete with considered architectural and design features, the property is a fine example of the ‘arts and crafts’ style. Core characteristics of this movement included a belief in traditional craftsmanship that stresses the inherent beauty of the material, the importance of nature as inspiration and the value of utility.

Entrants to the property are greeted by a good sized entrance hall with a characterful oak wooden staircase, in keeping with the quality of materials used throughout the home. The drawing room, including a raised stage with stained glass windows, sets the tone for this charming and truly unique period house.

Direct access to the rear garden, with a pavilion, is provided through an elegant conservatory fitted with dark wooden beams and oak lead framed windows. The architect’s meticulous attention to detail is still preserved in its original forms of door handles, hinges, windows and door latches. Facing the courtyard, a dual aspect kitchen/breakfast room connects to the wine cellar.

The Master Suite is on the first floor, with three more double bedrooms and impressive Victorian bathroom featuring twin basins, oak wooden flooring and arched decorative plaster ceiling. This magnificent Tudor house represents an opportunity to own a piece of English heritage.

Location and Background:

Harrow on the Hill, an affluent area of North-West London, was made famous by the eponymously named and world-renowned private school founded in 1572 under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I. Harrow has educated many of the children of the world’s elite, including a number of royal families and is walking distance from the property.

Harrow on the Hill Station, which connects to the Metropolitan and Chiltern line, is just a 7 minute drive from the property. The Metropolitan line means you are only a 16 minute journey into Marylebone and just 35 minutes to the City. South Harrow Piccadilly line is 0.6 miles away from the property and provides a very good connection to London’s Heathrow Airport in under 40 minutes.

First featured in print in a 1929 copy of ‘Ideal Homes Magazine’, White Cottage was designed by famous British architect Baillie Scott (1865 - 1945) in 1908 for Swiss musician Alfred Bussweiler. Scott was known for the work he put into both the exterior and the interior of his buildings and produced nearly 300 designs over the course of his career.

In his typically roughcast and vernacular manner, the house is arranged in an asymmetrical plan presenting an attractive collection of weatherboarded gable ends to the street scene. The building has a steeply tiled roof (typical of arts and crafts styling), as well as features such as a panelled oriel window to the right gable.

This planning of the house is accounted for by Scott's wish to preserve an old tree originally located in the courtyard, although that was later replaced by the existing Anglican style ornamental stone bird bath.
