Property description

Historic and beautiful Grade II* family home.

Description
During the stewardship of the present owners a programme of restoration has helped to create a wonderful family home offering spacious accommodation and with the scope for further changes.

Ancient beams and panelling, interesting floors and fireplaces, fascinating nooks and crannies all feature adding to the rich tapestry of The Priory’s history.

From the courtyard, the back door of the house opens to an inviting and welcoming kitchen/breakfast room with its four door Aga, window seats and quarry tiled floor. Solid oak base cupboards sit beneath granite worktops with a double Belfast sink. A central island, butchers block and walk-in pantry ensures plenty of storage.

The drawing room is a delight with its unusual crossed-beam ceiling, huge open fireplace that has been recently restored, tongue and groove panelling and glazed display cupboards. The wood panelled entrance hall, with its colourful chequerboard floor, houses the oak staircase which winds to the galleried landing above. Beyond is the dining room with ample entertaining space, fireplace and further is the sitting room, laundry room and home office with views onto The Causeway.

The principal bedroom suite has a dressing room and bathroom with bath, shower and double vanity unit with marble surrounds and splashback. The guest bedroom suite also has a bathroom. On the first floor are three further characterful bedrooms, a family bathroom and small nursery. A second staircase rises again to a loft bedroom.

Attached to the house and accessed from the ground and second floors is the magnificent timber framed barn, ideal for entertaining on a grand scale.

Outside
Old red brick walls define the different areas of the gardens and include a cottage garden, croquet lawn, orchard and vegetable garden. The Victorian style greenhouse and various brick outbuildings surround the cobbled courtyard. The walled cottage garden is creatively planted, forming the south westerly backdrop to the kitchen terrace. A further timber framed barn has been converted into a wonderful heated indoor pool with adjoining changing and shower facilities.
The timber framed double garage with full sized mezzanine was granted planning, now lapsed, to convert to an annexe.

Location
Steventon has a thriving community with an active cricket club, primary school, three popular public houses, small supermarket, Post Office and local artisan bakery. A wide range of highly regarded schools are available in the area, both state and private, including Didcot Girl’s School, St Helens and St Katherines, Abingdon and Radley.

It is ideally situated for easy access to Oxford, Harwell and Culham Science Parks and the motorway and rail networks via the A34. Regular bus services also run from the village to Abingdon, Milton Park, Harwell and Didcot.

In addition to the small village supermarket, there are many top-drawer local farm shops nearby with Abingdon offering a wide choice for everyday shopping needs. Historic university city of Oxford presents a wide choice of cultural pastimes as well as more extensive shopping and schooling.

Founded by Henry I, The Priory was not a true monastery, but rather a grange or farm administered by a Prior. During the Hundred Years War, the Priory fell on hard times and was sold into private ownership. It was eventually returned to the crown, namely Richard II, who in 1399 bequeathed it to Westminster Abbey who retained ownership until the last century.

With Grade II* listing, the house is of great historic interest with many architectural features preserved.
