HISTORY
The Mill was built in 1820 as a water-driven silk mill; the silk originally being milled by Napoleonic prisoners. In 1839 when the silk trade collapsed it became a grain mill and continued operating until the Second World War when it was converted into a small engineering works and used for building parts of the Mosquito Bomber aircraft. Later it was used as a sculptor's studio. In this latest conversion, it is one of the most desirable apartment developments in the area, with the mill's original water race still being harnessed for sustainable power. Generating its own electricity using one of the first Archimedean Hydro Screws in the country combined with solar photovoltaics, and collecting hydrothermal energy from the river to run the hot water and heating, the mill now produces over 23,000kWh of green electricity per year and saves over 26 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere every year.
