Woolwich has enjoyed a small renaissance. Several High Street chains previously absent from Woolwich have opened branches, i.e. Marks and Spencer, New Look, Sainsburys and WH Smith among others. The project includes demolition of several buildings including the Post Office, Crown Building, Peggy Middleton House and Thomas Spencer Halls of Residence, and the construction of new council offices called the Woolwich Centre, housing the new Library along with other services ( opened in August 2011 ) also housing, local shops and the largest branch of Tesco in Western Europe. Due for completion in 2012.

Located across the River Thames from Woolwich, London City Airport is less than 10 minutes from Woolwich Arsenal by DLR. The airport provides scheduled flights to destinations across Europe and a direct service to New York. Woolwich is very well served by regular bus services, with connections to the North Greenwich Peninsular (routes 422 and 472) and central London (route 53) within walking distance.
