Property description

A very striking and handsome, substantial family home built in the Streamline Moderne style in 1935, is surrounded by a generous garden and filled with light through its tremendous, curving Crittall windows and retains an abundance of original features. This is a prime opportunity to purchase a highly individual house which has only had 3 owners in its 87 year existence. On the northern edge of Boston it benefits closeness to town and country with The Wolds and the seaside no more than a 20 minute drive.

“The house was built in 1935 by Victor Durand, the famous qc. He sold it to the Addy family, well-known photographers in Boston from whom we bought it. It is extremely solid and well built, something those who have worked on the house always comment upon. It is actually elevated above ground level on stilts and is a very dry house. It used to be known as ‘the blue house’ as it was always painted pale blue and the road is the old Sibsey road but it was rerouted in 1960 so is now a cul de sac serving just four houses”

“We have lived here 58 years and it has been a wonderful family home. We have kept all the original features such as the front door, the panelling and the minster fireplace in the dining room – there is the oak parquet floor underneath the carpets in the hall, under the stairs and in the lounge. The dining room has a surround of the parquet as it was always intended to have carpet in the middle. The cupboard under the stairs used to be a bar area and there is still a sliding, mirrored hatch from here into the living room where drinks were passed through - it has been a fabulous place for parties. The bathroom too, has the original tiling and cast iron sunken bath which is easy to step in and out of”

“It is a very light and spacious house. Most of the rooms are double aspect and virtually all the windows are the original Crittall ones, some with their curved glass. The heating is a hot air system which blows out of vents so we don’t have radiators; it is very effective”

“There is a massive, fully battened and 80 per cent boarded loft which was used for a huge model railway by the previous owners”

“We created the big utility room which was a passageway between the house and the garage, and we added the sun lounge and the heated swimming pool in 1977. It was lovely for the children and, latterly, all the grandchildren learnt to swim in it. Currently not used, it could easily be restored”

“The house sits in the middle of the garden giving lovely views from all the rooms and the east facing bedrooms overlook open farmland. It’s a very private and peaceful garden with mature, sheltering trees and shrubs and is not overlooked at all. We have a little copse - a wild wooded area - and a gate opens onto the banks of the waterway. When the children were young, we had a rowing boat on the water which was great fun for them”

“The house is in a very convenient position being close to town but on the edge of open country. We are near the hospital and there are convenience stores within easy reach - you can walk or cycle into town - yet we are only about a twenty-minute drive to the Lincolnshire Wolds and the seaside”

Location

In the fens of South Lincolnshire, on the way out of Boston and just past the Pilgrim Hospital travelling North on the A16 towards Sibsey and on the bus route between Boston, Woodhall Spa and the city of Lincoln, Bourne Court is in a tranquil, leafy position on a lane serving just four properties. Boston is a thriving market town on the River Witham, with some lovely Georgian architecture but renowned for The Stump – Boston’s 14th century Church of St. Botolph’s with its stunning views from the tower. There is plenty to do and see. As well as the Pescod Shopping Centre, there are popular attractions such as the Guildhall, Blackfriars Theatre & Arts Centre, and Maud Foster Windmill. Also, within about a 15-minute drive, there is the award-winning Ark Wildlife Park and Exotic Animal Sanctuary at Stickney, The Bubblecar Museum at Langrick, the National Trust’s Gunby Hall & Gardens, and the start of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are excellent local sports facilities with a large indoor and outdoor tennis centre, 3 very popular golf courses and a variety of sports facilities at the Peter Payne Sports Performance Centre.

The coast is only 5 miles away at Freiston Shore, with the seaside town of Skegness 20 miles north, and 7 miles south a wonderful area, particularly for birdwatchers, the rspb Frampton Marsh. The miles of unspoilt sandy beaches of North Norfolk, including royal Sandringham Estate, begin just over 30 miles to the south of Boston.
