Property description

An outstanding coastal townhouse with panoramic harbour and sea views on one of Falmouth’s finest harbour facing terraces.

Description
Dunstanville Terrace was built in the late 18th and early 19th century primarily for packet ship commanders and merchants, with houses often being built in front of an existing fisherman’s cottage which is the case for No. 17. The house and cottage have been combined to create an elegant and spacious five-bedroom home.

The current owners purchased the house in 1987, with the previous owner having lived in the house since 1930. Over the last few years the house has undergone extensive refurbishment and has been sensitively modernised to include new bathrooms and kitchens and double glazing whilst retaining many of the lovely features of that period, including some very beautiful fireplaces, cornicing and staircase.

On the ground floor is the double reception room with magnificent sea views, this leads through to the galley kitchen that links up with the cottage. There is a double bedroom on the ground floor with French doors out to a small terrace and a second double bedroom on the first floor along with a modern bathroom

Stairs lead up to the half landing with access to the shower room and continue on up to the main reception room and kitchen/dining room. This is a lovely spacious reception room with impressive views and leads through to the kitchen/dining room. On the second half landing is a further bathroom before continuing on up to the third floor to the principal bedroom, again with amazing views, and a further double bedroom at the rear overlooking the gardens. On the top floor is the third bedroom, again with stunning views and an en suite.

There is flexibility for the property to be separated into two spacious dwellings creating a two-bedroom self-contained annex on the ground floor with the main house occupying the three upper floors.

Exterior and gardens

At the front of the property is a small front garden enclosed with iron railings and gate with granite steps up to the front porch.

At the rear of the property is a small courtyard garden with granite steps up to the main garden. All the gardens on this terrace have interesting gardens which in itself creates a pleasing view from the house and the garden of No. 17 is no exception.

There are a number of terraces planted with a variety of mature shrubs, fruit trees and flowers connected by granite steps and gravel paths with areas to sit and entertain before reaching the top part of the garden where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the Penryn River up towards Penryn, across the bay to Flushing and the countryside beyond and out to sea towards St. Mawes.

On the lower terraces there is a greenhouse and garden shed and from the top a gate that leads out onto Penwerris Terrace

Location
Dunstanville Terrace is the iconic face of historical Falmouth. Facing due east, the Terrace is a fabulous mix of colourful Cornish villas, Georgian facades and sea captains’ houses with stunning views across Falmouth harbour to the picturesque village of Flushing, the Carrick Roads and St Mawes. Bordered by the Greenbank hotel at its northern end and Admiral’s Quay at the southern, Dunstanville Terrace is also home to the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, and is widely regarded as one of the town’s most beautiful locations. The Terrace is just over 500 yards away from all facilities but enjoys life at a rather more leisurely pace than the bustle of the town centre.

Falmouth lies at the entrance to the Carrick Roads, a beautiful estuary bordered by countryside and small waterside villages as well as home to sheltered anchorages and yacht marinas. Falmouth also has wonderful sandy south facing beaches and is consistently voted one of the best places to live in the south west (The Sunday Times).

Falmouth harbour provides an ever-changing outlook and has hosted transatlantic races in addition to many other sailing and water sport championships. For the keen day sailor or dedicated yachtsman, the South Cornish coast offers some of the finest sailing waters in the UK. A short car, boat or ferry ride away are beautiful creeks and wonderful waterside pubs and restaurants.

Falmouth itself is a colourful and historic port with an eclectic mix of galleries, coffee shops, artisan bakeries, bars and restaurants. It is also home to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and several universities including Exeter’s Cornwall Campus and Falmouth University. Falmouth golf club sits on the headland above Falmouth Bay while much of the surrounding coastline is protected by the National Trust.

There is a huge amount of water sports on offer in Falmouth including weekly yacht and dinghy racing, gig rowing, paddle-boarding, diving, fishing with and also wild swimming which is becoming very popular locally. Gyllyngvase and Castle beaches are only 1.5 miles away just on the other side of Falmouth Town Train Station.

There is a branch line from Falmouth and Penryn to Truro where there is a main line rail service to London Paddington. Cornwall Airport, Newquay, has daily return flights to London as well as other domestic and international destinations.
